In other news, there was no hassle whatsoever about returning the LP of The Crane Wife at Backstreet. I exchanged it for the CD version, as well as Freak Out! by Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention. I refrained from buying The Tragically Hip's Day For Night and Elton John's Empty Sky, in a half-assed effort to cut down on my pre-Xmas spending. In order to render this effort completely useless, I later went to Chpaters, renewed my iRewards card, and picked up a study guide for the A+ certification. Soon I shall master it, write the exam, and then I'll be able to open a computer case without voiding the warranty.

So I wlked into Read's today for a latte...

Edit: There's a huge scratch on side three of The Crane Wife, during When The War Came. The problem persists on side four during The Crane Wife 1 &2. I'm going to have to try to return the album. Fortunately Backstreet Records doesn't seem like the sort of place that's going to give me a hard time about returns. They had the album on CD as well, so I'll have to try to work that into the exchange.

So, I misread my schedule, and I was not, in fact, supposed to work at 7 this morning. Rather, my shift starts at 9. I found this out when I showed up at 7 this morning, right after the owner and the cops showed up (I was literally just a few steps behind them) because someone had tripped the alarm. There was no one else around. Awkward, awkward, awkward. Especially given that I'm not a huge fan of cops.

Also, I'm pretty pissed at myself for getting up at 5:30 now. And although I do think dawn is a pretty time to be walking around town, I"d rather not do it again until spring if I don't really have to.

The key difference between the internet and space, then, would be that you can read about people bitching and whining quite easily on the internet, while I'm pretty sure that space doesn't have this feature yet.

The gist of today, for me:
I found out last night that I didn't get the job with CIBC.
I noticed that this meant that Connect North America was my only job prospect for the future.
I felt very much like not going in to work today.
I forced myself not to call in sick.
I spent my entire walk to work this morning trying to figure out the bare minimum I would have to work at Connect and still be able to make rent.
I think the answer to that one is that I would've had to have worked until Wednesday, but even then my rent would've been late.
I got to work.
I felt depressed about being there.
I logged onto the phones.
I logged off about nine minutes later.
I realised that if I'm thinking about taking time off when I don't strictly need it because I'm dreading the thought of going to work and it's only my third day on the phones, that I couldn't possibly last at Connect for any significant amount of time.
I packed up my stuff, found a supervisor (which was easy because there was one right behind me at the time) and asked him who I should turn my security card in to.
I came home and consulted several online job banks.
I'm probably not going to find a good job any time soon, but I should at least be able to find something washing dishes or serving coffee, which I won't enjoy but will be able to tolerate for several months, at least.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I'd like to bring it up again because it makes me feel better about my decision. You remember back in the 90s, how it was all the rage for a while for postal workers to flip out about how the mail never stops coming, and then they'd start shooting people from bell-towers or whatever? Hence the term going postal. I'm pretty sure that call centre workers are going to be the next ones to snap. I don't think they'll do it with guns here, but call centres are pretty widespread, so it's bound to happen somewhere, sooner or later.

Also, it was a mistake for me to quit my job at Read's. Or Reid's, as it was spelled at the time. As much as I was complaining about it the last couple of months or so, it was a pretty decent job, and Jeff, while frustrating at times, was a pretty good boss. I don't really regret having left to work at King's Landing, because King's Landing was awesome, but in the long run I do think it was a bad decision. I've been thinking this for a couple of months now, really, but I haven't really voiced it before.

If you happen to know of anyone who's hiring full-time (or part-time with hours that look deceptively just like full-time) in Freddy, could you let me know? I check the online job banks pretty much eight times a day, but not everybody is a big fan of advertising on these, and I do sometimes overlook things that are posted on them.
